The danger, inherent in such songs, of making the rhythms merely plangent, Joyce conquered by technical care. There would have been nothing fuzzy or forced, to his exact mind, about a statement like Pound's "Every emotion and every phase of emotion has some toneless phrase, some rhythmphrase to express it." 1 He made a careful distinction between lilting gestures of embellishment and the rhythms which imitate those discernible in the subject, S184/163, "the first formal relationship among parts and whole", P241/234, "the first entelechy", U425/413:

. . . the gift of tongues rendering not the lay sense but the first entelechy, the structural rhythm. U425/413.
